Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an iron security door and an iron entry door?

An iron security door, sometimes referred to as an security screen door, or storm door, is securely mounted to your home in front of your existing entry door. This allows you to open your entry door and enjoy fresh airflow. Security benefits are twofold; the screen protects pets and children from escaping when you answer the door, while intruders are discouraged and prevented from entering. Not all security doors are alike, however, as a screen door with an aluminum frame is no match for the robust American steel doors from First Impression Ironworks.

An iron entry door is a replacement for other entry doors, and is installed in lieu of an existing front door. Iron entry doors can be customized with arches, transoms, and sidelights for a first impression makeover. At First Impression Ironworks, we customize each iron entry door from hundreds of designs with wood, glass, or full wrought iron.

What is a powder coat finish?

Powder coat is the key to providing a lasting, quality finish to your iron door or gate. Only a quality application of thick, quality powder coat to a correctly primed steel surface will stand the test of time. Because powder coating does not have a liquid carrier, as paint does, it can produce thicker coatings without running or sagging. At First Impression Ironworks, we prepare each piece with a phosphate wash that cleans the steel and removes any debris. Then the powder coat is electrostatically applied uniformly from all angles. The door frame, mounting frame, hardware, hinges, and one-way screws are all on the bracket at the same time so it’s a consistent finish. After the powder coat is sprayed on, it is baked in an oven for 20-25 minutes at 400+ degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure the highest quality finish, we repeat the process of spraying the powder coat and baking it a second time, with the same duration and heat. This allows us to create a powder coat application that is over 3 mm thick.

Know what type of coating and how it is applied to ensure your product is created to last. Not all powder coat applications are the same–in fact, most of our competitors offer only a 1-2 mm thick powder coat application with a single baking process. This finish is thinner and more prone to uneven coverage or even thin areas where the electrostatic charge did not attract as much powder. Some companies only offer a liquid paint finish to their doors, which is the least durable and most likely to chip and peel off with normal use.
